Japan sends the world’s first wooden satellite into space – with help from SpaceX

The world’s first wooden satellite has taken off SpaceX rocket, its Japanese developers said, as part of a mission to resupply the International Space Station.
Scientists at JapanKyoto University expects the wooden material to burn when the device re-enters the atmosphere, potentially providing a way to avoid the generation of metal particles when a retired satellite returns to Earth.

These metal particles can have a negative impact on both the environment and telecommunications, the developers say.

Each side of the box-shaped experimental satellite, named LignoSat, measures just 10 cm (four inches).

It was launched by an unmanned rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Kyoto University’s Center for Human Spaceology said.
