NEW YORK (WABC)– Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday that Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch will be the next NYPD commissioner, effective Monday.

Tisch, 43, will become the second woman to hold the position in the department’s 179-year history. The first, Keechant Sewell, was also nominated by Adams.

Tisch is a 12-year veteran of the New York Police Department and the current commissioner of the New York City Department of Sanitation. She previously served as a counterterrorism analyst and eventually rose to the rank of Deputy Commissioner for Information and Technology.

“I saw firsthand the profound nobility of the policing profession and was proud to work side by side with uniformed members and civilians to propel the New York Police Department into the next century of technological advancement,” said Tisch. “I thank Mayor Adams for the tremendous honor of now leading the New York Police Department, and I understand the solemnity of this great responsibility.”

As DSNY Commissioner, Tisch successfully led the execution of the Adams administration’s “waste revolution,” which containerized 70 percent of the country’s 44 million pounds of waste.

“The people of this city have made it clear that they agree with what our administration has been fighting for since day one in office: a safer city where they don’t have to worry about walking on the street or taking the subway at night,’” Adams says. “To ensure New Yorkers have the ability to thrive in our city, we need a strong, proven leader who will continue to reduce crime and ensure New Yorkers are safe and feel safe, and I I can’t think of a leader more up to the task than Commissioner Jessica Tisch.”

Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Donlon had hoped to keep the position, but the mayor said he would remain with the administration in another role.

“I also want to thank Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Donlon for serving our city over the past two months, after a lifetime of serving our state and this country,” Adams said. “We appreciate his willingness to join us quickly and dedicate himself day and night to this city. I look forward to seeing him serve in his new role.”

Meanwhile, First Deputy Commissioner Javier Lojan will temporarily take charge of the sanitation department.

The President of the Police Benevolent Association, Patrick Hendry, released the following statement:

“Despite many recent leadership changes at the New York Police Department, the challenges facing police officers on the streets have remained the same. We are severely understaffed, massively overworked, and completely lacking the support of a justice system and oversight regime that is more concerned with punishing cops than helping. We look forward to working with Commissioner Tisch to make real progress on these issues as quickly as possible.

Kathryn Wylde, president and CEO of the Partnership for New York City, a nonprofit whose members are global business leaders and major employers in the city, said security is a major issue.

“Literally, a madman has to kill three people before he can keep them in custody,” Wylde said.

For business leaders like Wylde, harrowing episodes of violence, often perpetrated by career criminals or the mentally ill, have fueled the city’s perception as a place where no one would want to work.

“The number one issue for employers is the safety of their employees. The reason they are in New York is because we are the greatest talent pool in the world and that is why they are here and they will not be here. if the talent doesn’t want to be there,” Wylde said.

“The mission is to keep you safe, to make you feel safe, and to improve your quality of life. To restore dignity and order to every street, every neighborhood, every borough of New York City,” he said. Tisch said.

The need to pressure Albany to revise laws relating to discovery and how the mentally ill are treated is a challenge in itself.

A major challenge given the political obstacles the department faces daily.

Wylde, whose New York City Partnership supports companies moving jobs here, says Tisch is more than ready for the challenge.

“Jessie Tisch is very intelligent. And she has great empathy for the New York Police Department and what they’re going through,” Wylde said.

Jessica Tisch will be the mayor’s fourth pick in just under three years and her to-do list seems incredibly long.

She will be sworn in on Monday.
