HELENA, AlabamaWBRC) – The Helena police and fire departments competed Sunday for a barbecue called “Guns ‘n Hoses” to raise money for one of their own cancer fighters.

Ryan Mizell has been with Helena Fire for over a decade. He also served with the McAdory Fire Department for eight years.

According to a GoFundMe, Mizell received devastating news in April that he had been diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer, which had already spread to his liver and lungs. Since then, he has been undergoing chemotherapy.

He is medically retired for the moment, but he remains in good spirits and is confident that he will be back in Helena’s service after his recovery.

Mizell said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from his fellow firefighters, the community and even strangers.

“I’m overwhelmed and shocked at how many people – first of all, care about me and they care so deeply and want to show me their love and support,” he said. “People I don’t even know!” People pray for me. My family and I were very grateful and very overwhelmed and blessed.

THE the city raised more than $10,000 for Mizell as he continues his long battle with cancer. He expects to receive another update on his diagnosis in December, but says right now the cancer is shrinking and things are improving.
