NFL Draft Analyst Projects This Top College Quarterback Prospect to Draft Giants

There may be who doesn’t believe that Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is an NFL-ready prospect, but Vinnie Iyer of Sports news is clearly not one of those who share this opinion.

In his final NFL Mock DraftIyer projects Sanders, 6-2, 215 pounds, to the Giants at No. 2 overall, one pick behind the Jaguars, who Iyer predicts will select Sanders’ teammate Travis Hunter, the cornerback/receiver dynamo, with the top pick. in the general classification.

Notes Iyer on being selected for the Giants:

“Daniel Jones’ roller coaster with coach Brian Daboll continues to descend for periods after limited highs. Jones’ job and the Giants’ struggles could keep Daboll from returning, but whoever is in charge of the offense would push to replace Jones with Sanders. The Colorado star stands out from other QBs as the most refined pocket passer, one who can fit seamlessly into the feel of the Giants’ youth movement with WR Malik Nabers, RB Tyrone Tracy Jr., TE Theo Johnson .

At this point, there’s no doubt the Giants will move on from Jones after this season, especially if, as is expected to be the case, head coach Brian Daboll decides to bench Jones for the remainder of the season.

Jones’ tenure with the Giants has been anything but smooth, between constant turnover in personnel and coaching systems, and injuries that cost him much of the season — all out of his control.

But Jones didn’t help himself either, looking nothing like the confident gunslinger he was in 2022 during his first season with Daboll, in which the Giants finished 9-7-1 and with a berth in playoffs.

Setting aside the 2023 season, in which Jones dealt with his own injuries as well as those of his key offensive teammates, like running back Saquon Barkley and left tackle Andrew Thomas, it was hoped that in 2024, things would be different.

To ensure that, the Giants upgraded their offensive line, signed a No. 1 receiver in Malik Nabers and surrounded Jones with young talent, like those mentioned by Iyer.

But even with all that, plus Daboll returning to play, the results haven’t been close to what the Giants were hoping for. Jones, who is tied for the most touchdowns in the NFL through ten games, looked nervous in the pocket. His biggest problem has been his reluctance to trust what he sees after the snap, which has led to numerous missed opportunities to connect with wide-open receivers.

As for Sanders leaving for the Giants, another potential factor could come into play: Deion Sanders, Shedeur’s father and Colorado’s head coach, who has previously said he would personally intervene to ensure his son lands in the right team.

When asked what kind of team he would like his son to land on, Sanders responded during an appearance on SpeakOn FS1 that it’s all about the franchise being willing to help him succeed.

“Someone who can handle the quarterback he is. Someone who can understand what he’s capable of,” Sanders said.

“Someone who has had success in the past with quarterbacks or someone in an organization understands what they’re doing, doesn’t just throw you among the wolves if you don’t have the support and the infrastructure of the team, forget the line, he played with lines that weren’t great, but he was able to do his thing, just the infrastructure of the team, the direction we’re going. let’s go.

The elder Sanders, who added he will stay behind the scenes to make sure his son gets on the right team, will likely want reassurance that the Giants aren’t planning on having another coaching change anytime soon, especially after seeing how several changes in the coaching staff may have influenced Jones’ development.

Then again, it’s also unclear what Sanders thinks of the Giants’ current setup — or what the Giants, for that matter, think of his son as a potential franchise quarterback or whether they will pursue a veteran in free agency or via trade if they do. leaving Jones after the season, as planned.
