Nintendo Switch 2 news confirmed by Nintendo president and fans are delighted

Nintendo hasn’t officially revealed a Switch successor for nowbut we now know our biggest information yet. A statement from President Shintaro Furukawa during Nintendo’s latest Policy Briefing confirms that Nintendo Switch games, as well as Nintendo Switch Online, will be backwards compatible for the “Nintendo Switch 2”. But that’s not all. The company also lifted the curtain on other projects concerning its system of the future.

President Fuwukara the full statement reads: “This is Furukawa. During today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will also be available on the successor to the Nintendo Switch. Further information on the Nintendo Switch successor, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.

Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with Switch games and all online features of Nintendo Switch.

This means that there are still a few loose ends to be worked out, but anyone who has built up a collection of Nintendo Switch games can help them move forward. Additionally, some Switch games will be directly purchasable at launch via the new system, allowing players to expand their catalog after the fact. Access to Nintendo Switch Online will be completely uninterrupted.

This is all possible thanks to the implementation of Nintendo Accounts, which were only introduced in the Switch era. These accounts allow the company to assign data and purchases to specific players, allowing for a new sense of continuity instead of “interrupting the relationship” between the company and fans with each generation.

It won’t be long before we know even more about the Switch’s successor. This Policy Briefing mentioned an official announcement of the next console during the current fiscal year, which began on October 1 and ends on September 30, 2025. This is not surprising, because with two new Pokémon behind the scenes games (Pokémon Legends: ZA and the untitled Gen-10 releases), fans have long assumed the new console was on the way. However, the reveal of later compatibility information was unexpected.

There are a growing number of older Nintendo games available on Switch through the NSO Classic games library, with titles from the NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy and Gameboy Advance all relaunched through the service. We don’t yet know if other consoles will be included in the next era, but it’s certainly worth thinking about before any official announcements.

For now, we return to dreaming about what could happen. The meeting also showed huge growth for fan-favorite franchises in the Switch era, particularly showing the growth that Kirby, Pikmin, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Metroid have seen since the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Metroid Prime 4 which will be released in March (and The land of Donkey Kong returns HD scheduled for January), the focus certainly seems to be on bringing back familiar faces in 2025. Perhaps this trend will only continue with the Switch 2, but only time will tell.
