CDC reports Oregon detects its first human case of bird flu

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Friday revealed that a person tested positive for bird flu in Oregon, marking the first case in the state this year.

The case makes Oregon the ninth state this year to have positive cases of bird flu in its human population. But 52 people have tested positive for the virus. However, the CDC said there is no evidence of person-to-person transmission of the disease. by The Hill.

The CDC said the case is linked to an outbreak in birds in Clackamas County, Oregon.

“The Clackamas County Division of Public Health has been closely monitoring individuals exposed to the animal outbreak, which is how this case was identified,” said Dr. Sarah Present, county public health officer of Clackamas. “The individual suffered only mild illness and made a full recovery.”

The Oregon Department of Agriculture also said it was monitoring the situation and had provided protective equipment to farmers, in addition to training affected farm workers.

The public has been warned to stay away from sick animals, dead birds, their droppings and raw dairy products.

“We continue to remind the public that people at increased risk of infection are those who have had close or prolonged unprotected exposure to infected birds or other animals, or to environments contaminated with infected birds or other animals,” Dr. Dean Sidelinger, a state health official and epidemiologist with the Oregon Health Authority, said.
