Hyderabad Police imposes month-long ban on public gatherings, protests – Telangana News

The Hyderabad City Police Commissioner has banned gatherings of five or more people, processions, dharnas, rallies and public meetings within the city limits of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, with effect from Sunday, October 27 in the evening.

This restriction, aimed at maintaining peace and order in response to intelligence reports of potential unrest, came into effect on October 27 at 6 p.m. and will continue until 6 p.m. on November 28, 2024.

The current order also prohibits the display of images, signs, flags and the electronic sharing of messages that could incite public unrest.

Although this order restricted gatherings, peaceful protests were permitted, but only at the designated Indira Park Dharna Chowk. Gatherings or demonstrations near sensitive areas, including the Secretariat, were strictly prohibited. Violators of this ban would be subject to prosecution under relevant laws.

Police implemented these restrictions to ensure public safety and prevent possible disruptions in the city, especially during this festival season.

But there were also exemptions to this order, including funeral processions, individuals or groups specifically exempted by the relevant authorities, and serving military personnel.

Other exemptions included serving police officers, including Home Guard and Special Police officers, as well as the Education Department’s flying squads.

The order was issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023. Under Section 163 of the BNSS, district magistrates or similar authorities may issue written orders requiring individuals stop certain actions or take specific measures regarding their property to avoid harm. , disruptions or threats to public safety.

The magistrate and the state government have the power to modify or revoke these orders, and those affected have the right to appeal and present their cases.

Previously, these prohibitions were applied under article 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
