Shriya Pilgaonkar: Many times people introduce me with the label of OTT actor

November 16, 2024 at 09:59 IST

Shriya Pilgaonkar talks about her OTT success this year with The Broken News 2 and Taaza Khabar 2, and getting stuck in the media label

On the digital medium, actor Shriya Pilgaonkar had double the success with two sequels of his shows hitting the web and getting love—The Broken News season 2 And Taaza Khabar season 2. The latter was released a little over a month ago and the actor believes that “its success is similar to the success of a commercial film in terms of the love that people have given it.”

Even though she is proud of her OTT work, Shriya Pilgaonkar insists that she is classified as an OTT actress because of it. She says: “The film industry doesn’t hesitate to put you in a box. I don’t think people make the effort to think creatively about what they can do with you as a performer. That’s why somewhere, as actors, we take the responsibility to spoon-feed people what we are capable of. Many times I realize that in interviews people present me as an OTT actor, but I have the impression that these labels are ultimately not very important today.

The actor adds, “I think as an artist today, credibility and fairness are both important in showbiz. If people talk about me as a credible actor, that’s important. But I think there has to be a balance. However, Shriya admits that even the treatment of projects differs depending on the medium: “I notice a difference between making a hit OTT series and making a hit film. Perception still makes a big difference. It’s still very different because of the way PR or film editing is done.”

Shriya admits that most of her projects released on OTT are a coincidence. “Most of the time, you don’t necessarily know whether your film will be released theatrically or OTT. Over the past five years, the industry has gone through its own journey. Some of the biggest films didn’t work or didn’t take off. So, my priority when it comes to selecting work has been script-based and, incidentally, the scripts that I have liked have been on streaming platforms,” she says, adding, “However, even on OTT , because I have done more of a series format, for me it is important to balance it with cinema, even if it is not cinema.
