For the Tamil film industry, 2024 has not been so great as very few films have managed to achieve success at the box office. Among all these hit films, Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja was the first super hit. Made on a very limited budget, the film did wonders globally and entered the 100 crore club. In fact, it’s his highest-grossing film of all time solo. Now the film is gearing up for release in China, and the actor has a chance to take the next step.

Written and directed by Nithilan Saminathan, the Kollywood thriller was released on June 14, 2024. It met with positive reviews from critics and enjoyed favorable word-of-mouth among ticket-purchasing audiences. In theaters it was a big hit, and when it arrived on Netflix it became very popular and trended in the top 10 (non-English) films for weeks.

In India, Maharaja completed his theatrical tour at 71.30 billion net, which is equivalent to $84.13 million gross after taxes included. Abroad, the film did business $25 million gross, bringing the worldwide box office collection to 109.13 billion raw and earning a super-hit label.

Now as we can see Maharaja is 40.87 crores away from reaching the 150 crore mark. This can be achieved since the film is ready for a theatrical release in China. For the uninitiated, the Vijay Sethupathi starrer film will release in China on November 29. In the past, we have seen content-driven Indian films enjoy a large audience share in China, so even this Kollywood thriller is expected to bring in big numbers.

With Maharaja, Vijay Sethupathi has a chance of getting its first 150 crore gross (solo), and all eyes are now on how the film fares among Chinese audiences.

Meanwhile, the film was reportedly made on a budget of 20 million dollars. Compared to this cost, he obtained a return on investment (ROI) of 51.30 billion after subtracting the cost of national net collection. Calculating further, it recorded returns of 256.50%, thus ensuring a very successful verdict at the Indian box office.
