Here are our instant ratings for the Dolphins at Bills

Strategist

Tua Tagovailoa was sacked after dropping what appeared to be a decent shot of Aaron Brewer. Tua completed a no-look shovel pass to tight end Jonnu Smith. Tua threw a short pass to De’Von Achane and he recovered it for a 14-yard score and a 10-3 Miami lead. In the first half, an efficient Tua had a passer rating of 128.0. Tua rushed and dove on a fourth down in the fourth quarter.

Come back running

Raheem Mostert set the tone in the first quarter, as he hauled in Bills safety Taylor Rapp at the end of a good catch-and-run on third down. Mostert had a key 14-yard run up the middle that helped Miami escape its own end zone. Mostert’s value, despite rushing for 1,000 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, was still underappreciated heading into 2024.

De’Von Achane converted a key third down near the Bills goal line. Achane is a very valuable receiving threat. He’s truly Miami’s third-best receiver. Mostert fumbled on Miami’s first drive of the second half as the ball was removed. The Dolphins have committed seven fumbles in the last three games. And they lead the league in this category.

Fullback Alec Ingold aggravated a calf injury in the second half.

Grade: B+

Wide receiver

In the first trimester, Odell Beckham, Jr. made his first catch for the Dolphins. Later in the first half, he had a second one, in traffic. In the fourth quarter, Beckham was down on what was initially considered a fumble.

Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle will likely have fewer targets, especially deep targets, as Miami does whatever it takes to stay in games against teams like Buffalo.

Yes, everyone knows this is going to upset fantasy football owners. Too bad.

In the third quarter, Hill made a spectacular grab on the sidelines for a 28-yard gain. Later, Hill connected on a 27-yard field goal over the middle to Tua, who delivered a pass when he was hit.

Grade: B

Tight end

Durham Smythe got off to a false start. Smythe, further filling in for the injured Julian Hill, was also involved in the block when Raheem Mostert and Miami failed to convert on a 3rd-and-1.

Tanner Conner had offensive pass interference with Miami in the Buffalo red zone. Jonnu Smith was once again involved in Miami’s passing scheme.

Grade: C-

Offensive line

Austin Jackson made a false start. The Dolphins have done an overall solid job in the running game and pass blocking. Through three quarters, Miami allowed just one sack. Miami also surpassed 100 rushing yards. Miami offensive line coach Butch Barry has done a good job once again in 2024.

Grade: B

Defensive line

Da’Shawn Hand made a tackle for loss. The Bills ran the ball quite effectively.

Grade: C+

Linebackers/Edge

Anthony Walker started with inside linebacker Jordyn Brooks, likely because David Long has struggled in recent games. And Walker was active. Chop Robinson got a pressure from Josh Allen after getting around Dion Dawkins. Later, Chop had another one. He was very active and showed great motor skills.

Emmanuel Ogbah made a very impressive pursuit and tackle for a seven-yard loss on Allen to force a Bills punt. Ogbah plays with a torn bicep.

Grade: C+

Defensive backs

Cornerback Jalen Ramsey had an impressive interception from Josh Allen. He was defending a slant near the Miami goal line and ripped a pom from Bills rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman. Cam Smith was involved in a few defensive penalties shortly before halftime.

Jordan Poyer and Kendall Fuller were the two closest defenders when Mack Hollins caught a fourth-down pass from Josh Allen for a 12-10 Bills lead. Later, Marcus Maye failed to tackle Bills running back Ray Davis at the Miami 42-yard line, allowing Ray Davis to race 63 yards for a score, leading to a 20-yard lead. 13.

Former Bills defensive back Siran Neal was called for holding on an incomplete third down by Allen. Poyer had an unnecessary roughness penalty on Buffalo’s game-winning drive.

Grade: C-

Special teams

Jake Bailey had a bad 37-yard punt and things got worse when the Bills then returned it 29 yards. Jason Sanders made a 39-yard field goal to tie the score at 7. Sanders made a 23-yard field goal to give Miami a 13-12 lead.

Grade: C

Training

Mike McDaniel has a plan to get into the race, and once again, it was a smart plan. Miami’s defense, coached by first-year defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, wilted a little too often late in the game. And Allen led drives capped by two third-quarter touchdown passes.

Grade: B
