Steven Weber on Archer and Lenox as co-leads

One thing is clear in Chicago Med Season 10: Dr. Archer (Steve Weber) is not a fan of his emergency department co-chief, Dr. Lenox (Sarah Ramos). And this is even more true today than when they first met.

This tension comes to a head in the November 13 episode, which is also set to pick up where last week left off regarding Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) stalker. Below, Weber talks about these storylines and more.

To say there is tension between Archer and Lenox would be an understatement. This has been the case since she was introduced, but what does he respect about her and the way she works?

Steven Weber: She is clearly an expert and a brilliant technician. I’m pretty sure, with a few exceptions, he thinks that about everyone who works there. But what she represents is almost an existential threat because he’s a territorial man and a broken man. And so he’s still reliant on this kind of toxic macho, I’m king of the castle kind of attitude that it not only threatens but completely deflates because it’s the same in so many ways. And as future episodes will reveal, she has a backstory that makes her more relatable, which is reminiscent of how relatable Dean Archer became after some episodes where they showed he wasn’t just an asshole. And so he clearly respects her, but her abilities are not what concerns him. This is his place in the hospital.

Talk about playing this with Sarah.

She is incredible. She had a pretty tough job getting on this show. It’s a train that’s already moving and plays a rather strong character, almost explosive and unsympathetic, in a way. It’s like someone walks into the family den and who is that person? But she got over it immediately. She’s focused, specific, and easy in the best sense of the word, and she really complements her character in every moment. So it’s great to work with her. We’re having a good time. And look, I guess I’m speaking for myself. I couldn’t help but think that, oh my God, maybe I, Steven Weber, am about to be replaced. Maybe that’s what it represents. This is the narcissism and vanity of an actor. Then I had to calm down and realize that no, no, no. It’s just a tragedy. It’s just a dramatic conflict. So much the better for the show. But it’s great to work with her.

The logline for this week’s episode indicates that the tension is coming to a head between these two characters, and we saw at the end of last week’s episode, he wasn’t happy with the push that she did for this operation.

He wasn’t happy, was he?

What can you preview about this week? From the promo, it also looks like Goodwin is going to be sort of stuck in the middle, possibly getting involved.

I have to say that the upcoming fight against Mike Tyson and Jake Paul is nothing like a pee-wee fight compared to… not really. (Laughter) Yes, they’re definitely coming to a head, but there’s so much going on in this particular episode that, as powerful as it is, it’s the least people will react to. This week’s episode is going to be pretty, I use the word again, explosive.

Goodwin experienced this with his stalker. At the end of the last episode, it looked like he might be caught, but you never know how that’s going to turn out. So, to what extent is this going to start to carry over into the emergency and perhaps be something that Archer will have to deal with?

What a horrible question, because it’s so penetrating and suggestive and I couldn’t answer it except to say that your instincts are pretty sound, Meredith Jacobs, TV Insider. This show doesn’t drop many red herrings if the herrings can be dropped off, I don’t know, placed on a plate, I guess, or on a cracker. And so that was done at the end of last week’s episode to get people absolutely excited about what’s going to happen this week. All I can tell you is that when I told my mother what the episode was, she screamed. And I tell you, the public is going to lose their shit.

What else is coming for Archer? Are we going to hear more about stuff with his son? Because the ups and downs of this relationship…

What I was told is that they’re actually going to delve a little deeper into his personal life, that we might see him at home, which would be interesting to learn more about this guy. I know he’s a doctor, an accomplished doctor in a hospital, and he makes quite a bit of money, I suppose, but he’s not a sportsman. He’s not a guy who values fun in his life or relaxation. So that will be interesting to explore. And I was told that was a possibility. There’s more to go with Lenox.

Are there any characters that you have major scenes with coming up that we haven’t seen you with in a while?

Yes. In fact, there are good things to come with Kai (Devin Kawaoka). And so it’s an interesting duo because it also has an interesting sarcastic appeal and it would almost be fun for us to watch these two guys spar a little bit. There’s some interesting stuff going on with Dean and Dr. Charles (Olivier Platt).

These scenes are still so good.

Oh, thank you. They are fun to play. We love playing them. We just have great chemistry that predates this show. I mean, we were friends in the damn 80s for crying out loud. So it’s fun to be able to hang out and play with him. And there are great things to come with Epatha, who is heaven to work with. Talk about love. I mean, everyone on set is in love with her.

What would most surprise the Archer we first met about who he is now?

That he learned to not act on his impulses and just take a minute and what would surprise him is how empathetic he has become and how he is able to express himself. I wouldn’t say he’s completely zen and woke or whatever term you want to use, but he tries. He tries to connect to people by not just healing them like objects that need to be fixed.
