Opinion – William Woods: Peggy Houston Nienaber deserves to win House District 66 election

The November 5 ballot for District 66 will provide voters with an opportunity to reject candidate TJ Roberts’ extremism, immaturity and hateful and non-inclusive record.

Peggy Houston Nienaber, a Kentucky public school teacher, former accountant, wife and mother, will bring decades of knowledge, life experience and a voice of reason to the district. A member of the First Church of Christ, she is proud of her faith and her Kentucky roots.

The granddaughter of a coal miner, Nienaber was the first member of her family to have a college education.

“My grandfather signed his name with an ‘X’ and I can increase the level of public education for Kentuckians. We should not defund our public education system; we should increase it. If elected, Nienaber’s main goal will be to inspire the Commonwealth’s leaders to demonstrate the true value of public education.

The 11-year-old educator describes herself as your “normal neighbor” and categorically rejects her opponent’s radical agenda and record. Shortly after the murder of 19 students in Uvalde, Texas, a group led by Roberts posted a meme about guns? the answer was enough to make any honest human shudder – “All of them.” Roberts has apologized for the post, but continues to promote pro-gun rhetoric, including removing taxes on gun and ammunition purchases and eliminating gun-free zones in the Commonwealth.

Nienaber clearly states his point of view; “TJ doesn’t have what it takes to be a role model for Kentucky kids. Advocating for young people to own guns, using hateful rhetoric, and displaying a lack of humanity is not what our children need.

Nienaber also criticized Roberts’ recent decision to bring gun advocate Kyle Rittenhouse to Northern Kentucky for a campaign fundraiser. “Let’s not forget that Rittenhouse was a child when he killed these men. The reality is that he should have been at home with his family, not in another city pretending to be an armed doctor.

Roberts brought his self-proclaimed “friend” to Florence, just months after a mass shooting left four people dead in a highly unusual event for the area. Roberts moved the event from the Metropolitan Club in Covington to a smaller venue in Florence, claiming threats were made against the event. The truth is that the Metropolitan Club canceled the use of its venue, claiming that Rittenhouse’s appearance did not fit with the club’s mission of unity.

“Bringing such a controversial figure to this city was nothing more than an attempt to shock and intimidate voters. . …his choice demonstrates a monumental lack of respect for the city and those who want peace.”

Nienaber said we must work to establish common-sense gun laws. “I carry concealed weapons, I own a firearm for personal protection…I have no intention of taking guns away from anyone. I also don’t plan on giving them to children.

Focusing on issues with the greatest impact, Nienaber is working to overhaul certificate of need legislation, saying Kentucky families deserve more options when it comes to health services.

Support is mounting, with groups like the Kentucky Education Association, the Jefferson County Teachers Association, Gov. Andy Beshear, the Northern Kentucky Labor Council, the Boone County Democratic Women’s Club and others showing support — the moderate candidate welcomes support and conversations with Republicans tired of extremism.

“The residents of our neighborhood want to live in peace, work in a good environment and ensure the safety of their children. This is a non-partisan program. I applaud Republicans who want more than empty promises and shock and awe tactics. Our children deserve better – I think we can all agree on that.

Hoping to break the good ole boys club, Nienaber says she is working to make Kentucky a better place to live and work. “I’m just a normal person, I have no radical affiliation, I’m your neighbor. I want to make Kentucky a better, healthier, and happier place, and I can do that by giving a voice to our citizens in Frankfort.

Ask yourself this question: “Why would anyone vote for a candidate prepared by Savannah Maddox, Thomas Massie and Rand Paul? » TJ Roberts has been so driven by the establishment that he has no real plan other than to improve his political record.

It’s time for the unchecked rhetoric from Roberts and his colleagues in “Massie’s Nasties” (the not-so-secret group of citizens and elected officials who will stop at nothing to defend Congressman Thomas Massie) to end.

Our children deserve a role model, not a mini-cult of Trump, and our citizens deserve a representative who can truly speak for all citizens, not just the citizens he panders to.

The true Patriot of this election is Peggy Nienaber – for standing up to hatred and indecency when no other candidate would.

On November 5, citizens will have a decision to make. We can choose dignity, experience and independent thought – or we can choose extremism, radicalism and immaturity.

Peggy Nienaber is that candidate.
