A main central road faces illegal dumping every week

Central, La. (WAFB) – One of the main roads that runs through Central has been a bit of an embarrassment for a little over a month now.

Central Councilor Tim Lazaroe, from District One, took to Facebook when he noticed the fourth pile of debris and waste appearing after being cleaned up again.

“It’s totally nasty, like someone was cleaning their apartment or moving or something and that’s where they put their stuff,” Lazaroe told WAFB. “Dirty mattresses and it looked like the contents of a refrigerator had been emptied, there were eggs and raw mayonnaise and some other – you know, cold cuts.”

Central Mayor Wade Evans says it was illegal dumping and plans to find the person responsible. He says the Central Public Works Department has had to clean each load, costing between $400 and $500 each time, depending on the load.

“They need to be aware of this, because for every $500 I spend on something like this, this nonsense, that’s money we’re taking away from the good things we can do for our citizens,” said Mayor Evans.

When Councilor Lazaroe posted on Facebook, the pile was full of boxes and trash bags, as well as used products. However, when WAFB went to check, we saw torn and moldy furniture from the rain. The cost of these two situations would likely be different due to the labor and machinery required or not required to move the waste out of the cart.

So far, this mysterious dumper has cost the city about $2,500, according to Mayor Evans. He said the city plans to install cameras to prevent the culprit from dumping again. He also pointed out that the minimum fine for this type of illegal dumping is typically around $500.
