Tucker debates building new pickleball courts amid residents’ concerns

The city of Tucker is considering bringing pickleball to town. They held a meeting Thursday evening to discuss a proposal to build new courts at their recreation center.

The city is proposing to spend nearly $2.9 million to build 12 courts behind the center. A neighborhood lies beyond the trees behind the center.

Hundreds of residents gathered at the center to get information about the project. Many complain that the proposed courts could cause noise, light and traffic. “The noise factor would be detrimental to my health and well-being,” one homeowner said.

“More noise behind these neighbors sounds horrible,” Clementine Kornder said. She also says the city hasn’t given enough feedback to its neighbors. “They haven’t actually asked the neighborhood what they would like to do with this area,” Kornder said.

Matt Robbins balks at the price. “Oh yeah, it’s a lot of money,” Robbins said. “We need to rethink this.”

However, Robbins supports building courts. He says the city should think about ways to deal with noise and light issues. “We’ll look at ways to modify the noise. The lights, we can control that by closing the day at 8 or 7:30 or whatever,” Robbins said.

Jenny Fain, who loves the sport, says the proposed courts would be a welcome addition to her town. “Absolutely for it,” Fain said. “It’s a great exercise and a lot of fun for the community.”

Neither the mayor nor the developer, Root Studio, would speak with FOX 5 on camera. But the mayor told residents the courts were not a done deal. The city is studying the cost. A spokesperson said there was no timetable yet for the courts.
