Peanut, a squirrel made famous on social networks, seized by New York authorities

PINE CITY, N.Y. — A squirrel that became famous on Instagram after being rescued by its owner seven years ago was seized by state authorities in a raid, according to reports.

Peanut the squirrel – also spelled P’Nut or PNUT – has 533,000 followers on Instagram. But at least six officers from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation visited the home of Peanut owner Mark Longo on Wednesday after the agency reportedly received “several anonymous complaints” about the squirrel.

“Well, Internet, you WON. You took away one of the most amazing animals from me because of your selfishness,” Longo, 34, wrote in a post on Instagram. “To the group of people who called DEC, there is a special place in hell for you.”

Longo said he feared Peanut might have been euthanized. A DEC official would not tell The Associated Press whether the squirrel had been euthanized.

“For seven years, Peanut has been my best friend,” Longo wrote on Instagram. “He’s been the center of my world and a lot of yours for so long that I don’t know how to deal with it emotionally.”

WETM Reports Longo is the owner and operator of P’Nut’s Freedom Farm, an animal sanctuary that cares for approximately 300 animals, including horses, goats and alpacas. He recently welcomed into his home a raccoon named Fred, which officers also seized, according to reports.

Longo told WETM that he had recently moved from Connecticut to New York and was in the process of obtaining the necessary permits to keep Peanut and Fred. He said he hasn’t received any guidance from the state.

Longo said he saw Peanut’s mother get hit by a car in New York seven years ago, leaving the little squirrel orphaned. Longo brought Peanut home and cared for him for eight months before trying to release the squirrel back into the wild. “A day and a half later, I found him sitting on my porch with half of his tail missing and his bones sticking out,” Longo said.

Longo decided to take care of Peanut. After Longo posted a few photos and videos on social media, the squirrel became an Internet star.
