Karnataka government warns against authorities issuing eviction notice to farmers

On the orders of the chief minister, the previous letters and final reminders issued on November 7 to farmers and landowners have been withdrawn, the letter said.

“The officials who served recall-2 despite the instructions of the chief minister will face appropriate disciplinary action,” Kataria said in his letter.

He said he had been instructed to strictly implement the chief minister’s directives.

The new direction was issued in Karnataka, where polls are scheduled for three crucial assembly segments on November 13.

Some farmers in Honwad village in Vijayapura in north Karnataka claimed last month that they had received eviction notices as the Waqf Board claimed rights over the village.

Subsequently, complaints began pouring in from other parts of the state.

On October 25, BJP leader Tejasvi Surya alleged that Karnataka Waqf Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan had ordered deputy commissioners and revenue officers to register land in favor of the Waqf Board in a 15 day deadline, which caused confusion.

On Surya’s request, Chairman of Parliament’s Joint Committee on Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Jagdambika Pal, visited Karnataka on November 7 and met farmers from Hubballi, Vijayapura and Belagavi districts who had claimed that their lands were marked as Waqf properties.
