A day after North Korea claimed it had tested the “world’s most powerful” missile, experts say it is too big for war.

North Korea claimed on November 1 that its recently test-launched intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) was “the most powerful in the world,” a statement experts described as mere propaganda, the Associated Press reported. Experts say the missile’s size makes it impractical for real warfare.

The missile, named Hwasong-19, reached a higher altitude and longer flight duration than any North Korean weapon previously tested. However, analysts say this test does not demonstrate that North Korea has overcome the critical technological challenges needed to develop operational ICBMs capable of striking the continental United States.

Watch video of what North Korea claims is the world’s “most powerful missile”:

According to the North’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the missile is hailed as “the world’s most powerful strategic missile” and “the advanced weapons system.” The report said leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the launch, highlighting it as a demonstration of North Korea’s commitment to countering external threats to its security.

Observations of the launch reveal that the color and shape of the exhaust flames suggest that the missile likely uses pre-charged solid fuel. This technology improves maneuverability and complicates detection compared to traditional liquid propellants which require refueling before launch.

While South Korean military officials have hinted at the possibility of a solid-fuel missile test, KCNA did not specify the type of propellant used in the Hwasong-19. Experts noted that official images indicate solid-fuel technology, which allows for faster launches and better concealment. Before this test, the Hwasong-18 was North Korea’s most advanced ICBM.
