Dow Strengthens Footwear Innovation Portfolio with Low-Carbon Material Choices

Singapore – November 14, 2024Dow (NYSE: DOW) announced the launch of a portfolio of low-carbon material solutions that can help the footwear industry develop more sustainable products that deliver the same high-performance results.

The enhanced portfolio includes biocircular* materials allocated using a mass balance approach, reversible cross-linking resins, post-consumer recycled resins and polyolefin elastomers for artificial leather in various footwear materials and applications.

Giving a second life to used plastics

One example is its collaboration with Porto Indonesia Sejahtera, an Indonesian consumer brand specializing in recovery shoes. As the first in Asia to use Dow’s post-consumer recycled polyethylene resins in its footwear, Porto Indonesia Sejahtera has incorporated REVOLOOP resins into its range of premium sandals and flip-flops, as part of its vision to offer circular shoe solutions.

Dow’s REVOLOOP post-consumer recycled resins for use in shoe soles capture the value of plastic waste and help reduce carbon footprint through less use of virgin plastics.

Cipto Liusman, President of Porto Indonesia Sejahtera, said: “We pride ourselves on the quality of our reclaimed shoes, and Dow’s recycled plastic resins allow us to produce shoes that provide the comfort customers expect from us, but with increased durability. We look forward to further collaboration with Dow in the future to provide sustainable footwear solutions. »

“This expanded portfolio of circular footwear solutions is an important step in enabling brands and manufacturers to offer sustainable options to consumers,” said Bambang Candra, Asia Pacific commercial vice president for Packaging and Specialty Plastics business. from Dow. “By supporting the footwear industry with low-carbon and circular solutions that improve product sustainability while maintaining high performance, we reduce dependence on fossil raw materials and give new life to plastic waste.

Biocircular materials from sustainable sources

Relying on the Dow and Crocs collaboration Using ENGAGE REN biocircular polyolefin elastomers (POEs), Dow now offers biocircular options for ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and olefin block copolymers (OBC) in the form of ELVAX EVA REN and ‘INFUSE OBC REN. These are produced from alternative raw materials made from waste residues or process by-products that do not compete with food or animal production, helping to reduce reliance on fossil raw materials.

These resins from biocircular raw materials are International Sustainability Carbon Certification (ISCC Plus) certified using a mass balance approach, enabling customers to consider these materials in their supply chains while also supporting Dow’s goal to transform plastic waste and other forms of alternative raw materials by commercializing 3 million tonnes of circular and renewable solutions per year by 2030.

Shoe materials designed to be recyclable

Dow’s reversible cross-linking resins provide an innovative solution for manufacturing footwear materials designed to be recyclable. They allow used shoe foam sheets to be transformed into new resins, which can be reused in foam products with performance comparable to those made from traditional EVA/POE/OBC.

Polyolefin elastomers for artificial leather

Dow’s polyolefin elastomers (POE) can be used to produce artificial leather that can provide durability, stain resistance and 25% less weight than f-PVC (flexible polyvinyl chloride) and polyurethane leather for shoe uppers.

This artificial leather is designed for post-consumer recycling and is produced without the use of plasticizers, solvents and heavy metals, while having low odor and low volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It offers a safe and durable shoe material option that also gives designers flexibility in choosing colors, especially lighter ones.
