Here’s what Mike Woodson said after Indiana’s win over SIU-Edwardsville

Indiana coach Mike Woodson met with the media following the Hoosiers’ 80-61 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Wednesday night. Here is the full transcript of his interview.

QUESTION. “I know you’ve always seen Mackenzie’s offensive explosion and ability. 13 points in four minutes. 31 on the night. What did you think of his offensive game?”

MIKE WOODSON: “I thought he was the only one that really played good offense tonight. I mean, I thought we came out with good intentions. The ball moved early. We just got stale by a point offensive view in terms of moving the ball, making the pass extra.

“This team was able to hang on. A lot of that was because we just didn’t execute. I was able to improve on that. I thought our defense wasn’t too bad. We were able to rebound the ball better too many offensive rebounds.

Q. “You said a few weeks ago that you wanted the team to get off to a good start. Did you see any execution issues in offensive practices? How well did you practice things in the weeks leading up to that? “

WOODSON: “No, I thought we had some really good practices. The ball just wasn’t moving. Our bodies weren’t moving. I had to get better at that. I thought, again, defensively we were pretty solid “You take away their offensive rebounding, we’re really good defensively, but we just couldn’t stop them from playing. They’re not a great team, I have to stop us from getting better in that area.”

Q. “Mackenzie’s scoring, one block, one steal, improved effort and hustle plays on the defensive end. How have you seen him in the offseason with his approach and effort?”

WOODSON: “No, he’s still learning. I mean, I thought tonight was one of the best games he’s had since he’s been here. He was pretty solid defensively.”

“I look at what Kanaan Carlyle did from a defensive standpoint. Gallo comes in and defends, giving us nine assists. On this team, there’s enough to spread the wealth throughout the team if the guys play the right way. I don’t think there were times we played the right way tonight.

Q. “You had 16 turnovers, but it felt like some of them were trying to push the pace, moving too fast. Do you think that’s a number that’s going down a little bit as this team gets used to playing a little faster?

WOODSON: “Yeah, I think so. Myles, he had five turnovers. Three of them were where there was just nothing. He tried to split two and three guys and lost the ball. Those are things that can be fixed. He has to be patient to get us into something and then know what to do, what he has to do offensively himself. It’s still a work in progress to try to get him to play. good manners and being a true leader.

Q. “With Myles, what’s maybe the next step with him?”

WOODSON: “Again, I mean, good point guards, great point guards, they figure out how to make the players around them better, and then they always figure out how to score points in basketball.”

“He can score the ball, there’s no doubt about it. He’s shown it in training. I never want to take that away from him. But I want him to play the right way and lead our attack when he has the time to have the ball in his hands and make the right plays when it’s time to make them.

Q. “Trey has always been a jack of all trades for you. With the role he’s in now, can you say how much you appreciate that he’s willing to take the role he has and thrive in it? ‘ ‘

WOODSON: “Again, we can’t help but bring him out right now because he can’t play big minutes yet. He missed so many summer games, coming back from summer play until We are just trying to bring it back gradually, without burning it and hurting it again.

“I mean, tonight his minutes went up a little bit more. He played 17 minutes, but he played longer tonight. So we’ll see how he feels tomorrow when he wakes up and comes in for treatment. This will be the key.”

Q. “What do you think is the offensive identity of your team right now?

WOODSON: “I don’t know. I’m still looking. I know we can score in basketball. Some guys haven’t really made shots like I thought they would. They’ll end up going down.”

Q. “Obviously at Indiana you always carry the weight of high expectations. How do you manage that with your players, prepare them to meet those expectations?”

WOODSON: “We can’t hide from that. Expectations are a good thing. We expect that. So I expect our players to play at a high level. I thought we did that tonight .I just have to get us to where we “I’m playing 40 minutes a game the whole game, no matter what, no matter who we’re playing.”

Q. “The 16 offensive rebounds for them, were they bad rebounds or bad blocks?”

WOODSON: “No, I just give them credit from a team standpoint. They wanted it a little more than we did. It’s something that can’t happen. I have to go back and break this film down and put them in front of the film and try to improve.
