Politics is forcing many people to rethink their Thanksgiving plans

(Gray News)— Many Americans plan to avoid talking politics this Thanksgiving, but a quarter plan to abstain altogether to avoid family stress.

According to a new survey from Spruce, 64% of Americans say election-related stress is impacting their holiday plans, and 23% plan to skip Thanksgiving altogether.

According to a press release, the survey included 2,000 people from all 50 US states, split equally between men and women. She also surveyed adults ages 25 to 65 who regularly celebrate Thanksgiving.

Here are other results of the survey:

  • 59% are worried about political disagreements that could cause tension at their Thanksgiving gatherings.
  • 49% want a complete ban on political conversations for all guests and family members.
  • 63% plan to set limits on political discussions to prevent conflict
  • 52% say family members who support Trump are to blame for their election and their Thanksgiving anxiety.
  • 48% say family members who support Harris are to blame for their election and their Thanksgiving anxiety.
  • 52% have had arguments with family members over political differences

However, family and relationship experts at Spruce said there are ways to enjoy Thanksgiving this year without politics getting in the way.

They encourage families to set boundaries in advance that strictly enforce a “no politics” rule with Thanksgiving guests.

They also advise turning off the news on television while gathering and encouraging families to bring other distractions, like board games.

And if a conversation gets heated, know when to walk away.
