JLP gen sec warns MPs

MONTEGO BAY, St James — General Secretary of the ruling Jamaica Labor Party, Dr Horace Chang, has warned his fellow MPs that they must provide the support party workers need to secure a third term for the JLP.

His call comes as he encourages party members to put their affairs in order as the country prepares for a constitutionally scheduled general election by September next year.

Addressing a St James Central constituency conference at Corinaldi Avenue Primary School on Sunday, he encouraged workers having difficulties with their constituency leaders to let him know.

“If your MP doesn’t give you the power, talk to me about it, because you need to have the power to find the voters who support you and be able to bring them out on election day,” urged Dr. Chang.

“When the elections take place, I have no friends… If there is a problem, you can write to me because I will set up this machine and do the work,” assured the secretary general.

He said he shared a similar message with MPs earlier in the day.

Dr Chang, who told his supporters that there is a long list of government achievements that party workers can use to promote the JLP, assured that the general elections would be called at the right time. For now, he encouraged party members to go out and find the voters who will support the JLP and bring them home.

“Find them, put them in a little mesh and say, ‘These are mine.’ It’s your responsibility. You are responsible as a leader and your MP must empower you,” Dr Chang said.

“I will work with you in the constituencies, in the clusters and in the PDs (polling sections). We can fix it. I will have faith in the Jamaican people. I know we have done enough work to warrant a third term – and I know the people of Jamaica understand,” he added.
