Trump promises high tariffs on Mexico unless illegal immigration stops

Donald Trump insists until the last minute on two of his key campaign subjects: migration and customs duties.

At a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, one of the so-called “swing states,” the former US president pledged to impose 25% tariffs on all goods coming from the Mexico, as a sanction if the country does not help reduce immigration to Mexico. UNITED STATES.

“I will let him know from day one, or even sooner, that if they do not stop this influx of criminals and drugs into our country, I will immediately impose a 25% tariff on everything that ‘They send to the United States,’ he added. Trump said, referring to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

His proposal, Trump said, is sure to work, because if the 25% tariffs don’t work, he would increase them to 50%, then to 75%.

Currently, the United States has a trade agreement with Mexico (and Canada) came into force in July 2020, according to which most goods crossing the border between the two countries are exempt from customs duties.

Mexico is in fact both the second largest buyer of American products (after Canada) and the second largest supplier (after China), according to at the Office of the United States Trade Representative.

If elected, Trump has pledged to introduce various tariffs on all US imports, such as a 20% duty on all goods from all countries, 60% customs duties on Chinese products and even a 100% rate on every car produced in Mexico.

He also has propose replacing the federal income tax with tariffs, a claim that has been disputed by tax expertsbecause it would be practically impossible to compensate for the loss of revenue by increasing prices.

Any attempt to replace income taxes with tariffs also risks shifting the tax burden from wealthier individuals, who pay higher income taxes, to lower-income families who spend more part of their income to purchase essential goods.
