What are the issues on election day?

Whether we support the Democratic candidate for president, Vice President Kamala Harrisor the Republican candidate, former president Donald Trumpeach promises a different future for the United States and for Michigan.

To cite just a few examples, Harris would defend women’s rights to make their own reproductive choices, while Trump says he would leave it up to individual states to decide these matters. Harris generally supports a gradual transition to electric vehicles in the auto industry, which Trump generally opposes. Trump is promising double-digit tariffs on foreign imports to pressure foreign manufacturers to make their products in the United States. Harris says it would amount to a national sales tax that would hurt consumers. Trump promises mass expulsions of undocumented migrants, something Harris opposes.

Also in game:

  • Michigan’s picks for US Senate and the American house could make the difference in determining which of the two major political parties controls each chamber.

  • Control of the Michigan State Chamber is also up for grabs and will impact the extent to which Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is able to implement what remains of her agenda in the final two years of her term.

  • And the choices Michigan makes for State Supreme Court will determine whether Democratic candidates maintain their current 4-3 majority in this influential body.

When will we know the full election results?

When polls close at 8 p.m. local time, election officials can begin releasing unofficial election results. Even though the results will begin to trickle in when the polling stations close, the outcome of a race may not be clear for some time. It depends on how close the race is and how many voters return their absentee ballots on Election Day. Processing mail-in ballots takes longer than ballots cast in person due to the additional steps involved after a voter returns their mail-in ballot to verify and record the ballot and then prepare for counting.

In 2020, the Associated Press — which tracks races across the United States — was unable to call President Joe Biden the winner in Michigan. until 5:56 p.m. ET Wednesdaythe day after the election of November 3, 2020. The AP called races before all votes are counted, based on an analysis of previously reported votes and other election data. The Free Press relies on calls from the AP.
