Suspect and victims identified during hours-long standoff in Holliday

VACATION (KDFX/KJTL) — The victims and suspect of the hours-long standoff that occurred in Holliday on Thursday, November 7 have been identified by authorities.

The standoff began around 3 p.m. after police responded to a home near Holliday following reports of shots fired. In just a few minutes, police locked down Holliday ISD and nearby homes to prevent injuries from crossfire.

Corey Drake was identified as the suspect in Thursday’s standoff, according to Wichita County Sheriff David Duke.

According to Wichita County Sheriff David Duke, Archer County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene on Foard Road after dispatch received a call from Drake’s mother stating that Drake had shot his parents, now identified as Fred and Peggy Maier of Holliday, Drake’s grandparents.

Duke said when Archer County deputies arrived on the scene, Drake used a long rifle and fired at law enforcement. They then fired back at Drake and immediately called for outside assistance from other agencies on the scene.

The Wichita County Sheriff and the Wichita Falls Police Department responded to the scene.

Authorities say Drake barricaded himself in a metal barn on the property with his firearm. Agencies such as SWAT and Texas DPS also arrived and began working the scene with a drone to gather more information, but the suspect then shot down the drone.

The officers used armored vehicles to negotiate with Drake, but he refused to speak to them. As police attempted to negotiate, other agencies, including the Texas Rangers, arrived on the scene.

Around 9 p.m., deputies sent an armored and covered Bobcat to take down the walls of the barn where Drake was hiding. Law enforcement then used toxic chemicals in hopes of cleaning the barn, but officers learned that Drake was wearing night vision goggles and gas masks, limiting the effects of the toxic chemicals.

Around 10:15 p.m., law enforcement continued to use chemicals when they saw Drake raise his rifle at the officers, who then shot Drake.

There is no confirmation that Drake was killed by a sniper or due to trauma to the suspect’s body. Drake is believed to have owned a shotgun and a rifle. As of this article’s publication, the Texas Rangers have taken over this investigation.
