Manga Library Z will close its doors in November 2024

After 14 years, Manga Library Z will be close its online services on November 26, 2024. According to the announcement, this is due to problems the site has had with credit card companies and others in recent years.

Manga Library Z was an online service that allowed people to read out-of-print manga series, while also providing income for the original artists in the form of advertising revenue. Some Manga Library Z series are exceptionally rare, or are now only available in digital format. Ken Akamatsu, the creator of series like I love Hina and now a Japanese politiciancreated Manga Library Z (then J-Comi) in 2010. At the time, online manga libraries were quite rare. But Manga Library Z has managed to survive even with more competition than ever.

The announcement then goes into more detail about why the site needs to close. This is because payment services such as credit card companies are cutting ties with them. As this would result in loss of revenue, Manga Library Z attempted to protest, but the companies did not budge on the decision. Without money, the site cannot return any profits to the authors and has therefore decided to close the site instead of betraying the trust of artists or fans. He apologizes for this decision. This isn’t the end of Manga Library Z, however, and the site is looking at different ways to reboot it. Some possibilities include crowdfunding or becoming a nonprofit.
