Week 9 Game Winners, Losers – NBC New York

The Kansas City Chiefs keep winning.

Kansas City improved to 8-0 on the season, the only undefeated team remaining, after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-24 at home in overtime on Monday Night Football to close out Week 9.

The Chiefs trailed 17-10 in the second half, but, predictably, rallied to take a 24-17 lead late. However, Baker Mayfield triggered a last-minute drive to tie the game and send it to overtime.

But Patrick Mahomes and Co. won the toss and received the ball, never letting Mayfield shoot after Kareem Hunt scored the game-winning touchdown.

Let’s analyze the game with winners and losers in more detail:

WINNER: Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs

Mahomes has strangely been far from elite this season, but that doesn’t matter with Kansas City winning anyway. But the star signal-caller had his best game of the season, completing 34 of 44 passes for 291 yards, three touchdowns and no picks.

Mahomes suffered a non-contact ankle injury, but returned very well to lead the comeback charge and, ultimately, the victory.

LOSER: Bucs’ valiant efforts not enough

Tampa Bay entered the game with low expectations to pull off the upset without stars Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. However, the Buccaneers gave Kansas City all they could handle, taking them to overtime even though they didn’t have a chance to tie again.

Baker Mayfield completed 23 of 31 passes for 200 yards, two touchdowns and no picks, with tight end Cate Otton and Sterling Shepard stepping up as their receiving options.

Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey had two sacks each on defense, while Lavonte David and Antoine Winfield Jr. also got involved often. But the collective effort was unsuccessful.

WINNER: DeAndre Hopkins, Chiefs

Hopkins’ second game went much better than his first.

After just two catches for 29 yards last time out against the Las Vegas Raiders, Hopkins recorded eight catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns against Tampa Bay.

Hopkins once again showed his pass catching abilities and why quarterbacks trust him as a WR1. He will likely remain an elite option for Mahomes.

LOSER: Bucs’ running game

While Tampa Bay’s defense gave the team a platform and Mayfield took care of the football, the running game left a lot to be desired.

Of five players who recorded a rushing attempt, none had more than 24 yards, which was the case for Bucky Irving on only seven carries. Rachaad White probably deserved more carries after recording 19 yards on three attempts and a touchdown.

However, Kansas City fields one of the best run defenses in the league, and it was no different in this one.

Next week 10

The Chiefs will look to maintain their unbeaten run when they host Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos in a division battle.

Tampa Bay hopes to avoid a 4-6 record when it hosts Brock Purdy and San Francisco 49erslooking to improve to 5-4.
