La Crémerie Cajou almost permanently closes its doors, until the community intervenes

MOUNT VERNON, Md. — For two days straight, Cajou Creamery had lines around the block of people eagerly waiting to grab a scoop of its unique ice cream and help keep the doors open.

“I’ve had so many great experiences here that I thought, ‘Absolutely not like I’m going to do anything I can to help them,’” Dwight Campbell said.

Early Saturday morning, the owners of Crémerie Cajou made a post on social mediasaying the business may have to close its doors permanently after the weekend.

Shortly after this message, dozens of people showed up at the creamery, then dozens turned into hundreds.

“I knew this would happen because that’s what Baltimore is, you know, that’s what Baltimore is,” Campbell says.

Not only was the queue out on Saturday, but again on Sunday.

“We love what we do and we love the city we are in; we want to build here; the only problem is that food companies tend not to get financing. »

People online say they want the business to stay open, including a group of students who saw the social media post.

“I came here; I have been in the area for a few years. We are all students at MICA and Cajou is such a beautiful kind of part of the city that we discovered,” explains Artie Sadahiro.

Kate Van Luben says they were proud to line up outside the business; They say seeing so many people come out to support an ice cream business on a cold fall day warms their hearts.

“This is such an important thing, and to see this in this community is so exciting, and so I’m very happy to see this work, especially for a small business,” says Kate Van Luben.

Dwight Campbell says the turnout over the weekend was more than he could have asked for from the community, and despite them selling out every flavor and pint they had in stock.

Campbell says this is just the beginning of the company’s recovery.

“It gives us a reprieve, yes, but the underlying problem is still there; you know, its financing for small businesses.

What happened this weekend may keep the doors open a little longer, but the owners say to keep the doors open permanently, the business will need additional funds.
