The day before Election Day 2024, a video from a person claiming to have witnessed suspicious activity at a South Carolina polling place that was widely shared on social media.

In the video, the person claims to have seen people pull up in a vehicle and vote – that is, he said he saw election workers approach the car with a voting machine and apparently operate this device on behalf of voters:

I just passed by one of the voting places where I live, and you don’t go there to vote. You arrive in your car, they bring the machine to your car. They push the buttons for you. There were no Republicans there. They were all Democrats. What is happening in America? What is happening in our country right now with our elections?

It is unclear how, or with what evidence, the narrator believed that those involved “were all Democrats.” The camera in the video remained focused on him – it did not depict the alleged activity at the station – because he said “there was too much traffic.”

Nonetheless, as the video gained popularity on the affirmation that a “South Carolina polling place” “wouldn’t let Americans submit their own ballots”:

There was no evidence to confirm or deny the narrator’s story. The video does not specify the polling location in South Carolina or any details to determine whether what he claims actually happened.

That said, the activity he describes is consistent with South Carolina’s voting protocols for disabled or elderly voters. As noted on the South Carolina Board of Elections website, people with accessibility issues can vote by car (emphasis added):

Voters who cannot access the polling location or wait in line to vote due to a disability or who are 65 years of age or older may vote in their vehicle. Curbside voting does not require a handicapped parking placard. Poll officials monitor the curbside voting area at minimum 15-minute intervals. Only the voter is allowed to ride in the vehicle while voting, unless they are eligible for assistance. The driver and other passengers in the vehicle are not eligible to vote curbside unless they individually meet the required qualifications.

Additionally, some people are entitled to operating assistance actual voting machines (emphasis added):

Voters with disabilities and voters who are blind or unable to read or write may receive assistance in voting.. You must notify a poll manager if you need assistance. You can choose anyone to help you vote, except your employer, an agent of your employer, or an officer or agent of your union. Poll officials also provide printed instructions for voters who are deaf or hard of hearing.

In summary, there is no evidence that South Carolina officials are preventing people from voting on their own, and the activity depicted in the video complies with state regulations governing accessible voting.

As such, it is false to present the video as evidence of a South Carolina poll not allowing people to submit their own votes.
