How to prepare for bad weather coming to the North Coast

The seasons first atmospheric river to slam the west coast is here, which could potentially cause power outages, downed trees and flooding.

Humboldt County Emergency Services Program Manager Ryan Derby explained the best way to prepare.

“Some important steps residents can take to prepare are to avoid travel,” Derby said. “If they don’t have to be on the road, stay off the road and, during high winds, make sure they stay indoors. away from their windows, to ensure they are not exposed to falling debris or other wind-related hazards.

This storm is expected to be significant, bringing torrential rains that will saturate the soil and strong winds. Residents and businesses are advised to prepare for possible power outages, as well as wind and water damage.

Brice Weyer, CEO of Hensell Materials in Eureka, says sandbags can help divert water if your property or business has a history of flooding.

“Sandbags are going to keep water out of areas you want to keep it out of,” Weyer said. “If a lot of people have a drainage system that goes into their house or garage, things get wet, so you can stack the sandbags and keep the water away from the things you want to keep it away from.

Heavy rain is also expected to cause flooding of small streams and watercourses, with a risk of urban flooding and minor to moderate flooding on some major rivers. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to heed the warnings.

“We recommend that they take some emergency preparedness measures, making sure they have a kit and somewhere to go if it is necessary to evacuate, although at the moment we “We’re not forecasting that and then we’re really looking to the National Weather Service for the most up-to-date information on what’s going to happen with the weather,” Derby said.

The Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services encourages everyone to register Humboldt Alerts.
