3 teams ranked too high and 3 too low

We made it, folks. Not in reality College Football Playoffs – it’s still a few months away – but we’ve reached the first college football playoffs rankings of the year. And you will be shocked to learn that the selection committee made questionable decisions during the first edition of the CFP ranking. A few teams are ranked too high, a few teams are ranked too low, and a few teams aren’t ranked at all like they probably should be. Here is the ranking and the committee’s biggest failures during a big evening at college football.

  1. Oregon Ducks
  2. Ohio State Buckeyes
  3. Georgia Bulldogs
  4. Miami Hurricanes
  5. Texas Longhorns
  6. Penn State Nittany Lions
  7. Tennessee Volunteers
  8. Indiana Hoosiers
  9. BYU Cougars
  10. Notre Dame fighting the Irish
  11. Alabama Crimson Tide
  12. Boise State Broncos
  13. Mustang SMU
  14. Texas A&M Aggies
  15. LSU Tigers
  16. Ole Miss Rebels
  17. Cyclones in the State of Iowa
  18. Pittsburgh Panthers
  19. Wildcats of the State of Kansas
  20. Colorado Buffaloes
  21. Washington State Cougars
  22. Louisville Cardinals
  23. Clemson Tigers
  24. Missouri Tigers
  25. Black Knights of the Army

We’re starting to think that no one actually watches Missouri football, because in what world should they be ranked ahead of Army? It seems like Missou’s win over Vanderbilt is doing a lot of heavy lifting right now as it’s the only impressive win on the Tigers’ schedule. If this team had a 6-2 record with a few ranked wins and a few high-profile close losses, this ranking would make a little more sense. This is not at all what their CV looks like! Missouri lost to Alabama and Texas A&M by a combined 65 points, and (with all due respect) beating Murray State, Buffalo, and Boston College shouldn’t carry much weight in the CFP rankings.

The Black Knights climbed to No. 18 in the AP poll this week, and that seemed like a pretty fair spot for this team after improving to 8-0, with the most recent win coming without star quarterback Bryson Daily . But the CFP selection committee considered that it was far too high, apparently, instead of ranking 25th in the Army.

Maybe a little too generous. Notre Dame has some nice wins against Navy and Louisville, but also the worst loss among the top 10 teams against Northern Illinois. They’re a good football team – Notre Dame has crushed teams recently – but the overall record isn’t very impressive, with its other four wins coming against Georgia Tech, Miami (OH), Stanford and Purdue. This team will probably deserve to be in the CFP bracket by the end of the season, but they haven’t earned it yet.

We can’t entirely blame you for forgetting about Washington State in a non-conference season, but they’re 7-1 and that only loss was to a team from Boise State who is currently ranked 12th (which might also be too low!) Wazzu doesn’t have any huge wins but he has beaten Texas Tech and Washington so he has shown he can hang with Power 4 teams .

Being out of conference means Wazzu needs a big player to make the field, and being ranked 21st right now could make it difficult for the Cougars who no longer have any ranked opponents on the schedule.

The Nittany Lions staying ahead of a team like Indiana (which is 8-0, btw) is a bit silly after a loss, especially when Penn State’s resume wasn’t even that strong . Before this weekend. At all, really. Penn State doesn’t have a single win in the top 25, and its best win this season was probably against Illinois, which has slumped in recent weeks.

Penn State’s path to the CFP is pretty clear, but staying at six despite a loss and a weak schedule is a failure on the part of the committee. Changing the Nittany Lions and Hoosiers would make a lot more sense. No. 8 would be a good spot for Indiana if it didn’t have a clearly worse team ahead of it. Penn State is clearly worse.

While Notre Dame’s best win is against Louisville, beating the Cardinals is only SMU’s second-best win, and the Mustangs’ only loss is against a BYU team that currently figures to have a bye at first CFP tower. How is that not a good enough resume to warrant a top 12 spot right now?

Of course, if SMU makes the ACC championship game, it’s a near-lock for the CFP regardless of its seeding tonight.
