“Arnold Palmer, ‘the greatest golfer in the world,’ arrives today from Australia to play in an exhibition match at Royal Hongkong Golf Club Sunday“, reported the South China Morning Post of October 28, 1964. “Mr. Palmer is accompanied by his wife Winnie and his manager, Mark McCormack.

“Building on his recent success at the Piccadilly World Match Play Championship in England, which he won, and the Wills Tournament in Sydney where he finished tied for third, Palmer is expected to provide Hong Kong sports fans with a scintillating spectacle on Sunday.

“Apart from the exhibition, he will appear as the guest of honor at a cocktail party at the Hilton Hotel tomorrow and before his exhibition match he will give a golf clinic at Fanling on Sunday at 11 a.m. Spectators expected are advised that the men’s clubhouse will be open to ladies during the match and that light refreshments and soft drinks will be available on the course.

“Lu Liang-huan, the club professional who knows the route better than the palm of his hand, returned a square score with the card, two shots behind the American during his exhibition match. The Chinese golfer had a good round.

“A comparison and analysis of the two scores gives a pretty clear picture of Palmer being considered the greatest golfer in the world.

“Palmer didn’t seem to play brilliant golf yesterday. His tee shots were rather mediocre for a player of his caliber and the greens did not please him. But he never three-putted – and his short game was impeccable.

“Both players had pars for the last two holes.”
