‘Thank You’ Cookies Sent to North Carolina Election Office Trigger Emergency Response

WAKE COUNTY, NC — No good deed goes unpunished election workers in North Carolina.

A thank you gift of pineapple-shaped cookies delivered to the Wake County Board of Elections sparked a hazardous materials response Tuesday after election workers raised concerns about a suspicious package sent from Hawaii.

“We’re automatically on alert for these things,” Wake County elections specialist Danner McCulloh told ABC News, citing recent incidents of suspicious packages containing powder sent to election offices across the country.

Raleigh police and firefighters quickly responded to the incident, which was treated as a hazardous materials situation. Bomb technicians x-rayed the package, according to Lt. Jason Borneo of the Raleigh Police Department.

We are automatically on high alert with these things.

After the package was deemed non-threatening, authorities opened it and learned it was filled with pineapple-shaped cookies from the Honolulu Cookie Company. The package, which was sent from an address in Hawaii, also included a handwritten thank you note, according to a Raleigh Fire Department spokesperson.

The operations at Wake County Board of Elections were not affected in the incident, a county spokesperson said.

It was a kind gesture.

According to McCulloh, someone who heard a radio report about Wake County decided to send the cookies out of the blue to thank election workers.

“It was a nice gesture,” McCulloh said, while advising anyone not to send cookies to his office.
