Risk of isolated storm Saturday evening, more active next week

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – We can expect a great evening for all your outdoor projects; just keep a jacket handy for when temperatures drop.

Patchy fog overnight

Overnight we see skies gradually becoming partly cloudy as lows fall into the 30s and 40s. Patchy fog is possible late tonight and early tomorrow morning, so be sure to drive slowly and keep your low beam headlights on if you encounter a fog bank while driving.

Partly cloudy Saturday, isolated showers or thunderstorm Saturday evening

We remain dry through the first half of the weekend as high temperatures Saturday reach the mid 50s under partly cloudy skies. A cold front moves in Saturday evening and a shower or thunderstorm could occur as the front passes.

Due to the lack of moisture ahead of the front, anything that develops will be very isolated in nature and many areas can expect to remain dry. Any chance of showers or storms is gone before dawn Sunday, but skies become mostly cloudy and stay that way through the second half of the weekend. Lows Saturday night will be in the low to mid 40s.

Your first alert: cloudy Sunday, rain Monday

Skies remain mostly cloudy Sunday and an isolated shower is possible south of Highway 30 Sunday afternoon as a storm system moves across the Plains toward the Midwest. However, for the most part, we’re dry until the end of the weekend, as temperatures reach the mid-50s again on Sunday. Lows fall into the upper 30s Sunday evening while skies remain cloudy. The approaching storm system brings rain Monday morning, which spreads across eastern Iowa from south to north. The rain stays with us all day Monday and all night Monday. Monday highs reach the mid 50s and Monday night lows fall into the mid 40s.

Your first alert: drier trend, still cold at the end of next week

We mentioned this week that the forecast for next week will be complex and subject to change. Well, that’s exactly how things turned out. Our forecast has become drier for the second half of next week, as the storm system that was initially expected to linger over our area for several days is now expected to move out fairly quickly. A few lingering showers are possible Tuesday morning, but they will ease over the course of the day. Highs Tuesday reach the mid 50s and we are dry Tuesday night as lows fall to the mid 30s. There is a slight chance of showers Wednesday and rain or wet snow showers Wednesday night as colder air begins to filter.

Wednesday highs reach the mid 40s and Wednesday night lows fall into the 30s. The remainder of next week now looks dry, as highs range between 45 and 45 degrees and lows fall in the 20s and 30s. Continue to pay attention to the forecast for the second half of next week, as there is still plenty of time for the forecast to continue to evolve and change. In the meantime, we will keep your First Alert forecast updated with the latest information throughout the weekend and into next week as active weather returns.

We can expect a quiet workweek and a generally dry weekend before the rain sets in next week.
