City Power cuts electricity to 25 Alexandra businesses over non-payment and tampering with meters

JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg City Power has cut off electricity to 25 businesses in Alexandra for non-payment and tampering with their meters.

At the beginning of October, smart meters were installed in 40 points of sale in Alexandra to put an end to illegal connections.

However, 25 of them were found to have tampered with the meters, resulting in significantly lower payments than required.

“We realized that there are some meters that are no longer buying electricity, and when we arrived here this morning (Tuesday), we realized that they have bypassed themselves and are using electricity without pay it,” said Isaac Mangena, a spokesperson for City Power. .

Mangena said a businessman was arrested for tampering with electrical infrastructure.

“There’s a store that pays R50, and they have huge business. That means they’ve tampered with the meter to charge them a lower amount.”
