US orders charter flight to return to India over attempted illegal migration

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has ordered the return of a large charter flight to India in an attempt to illegally migrate.

The flight, carrying Indian nationals, left the United States on October 22 and returned to India.

Indian nationals have been unable to establish a legal basis to reside in the United States.

“Indian nationals without a legal basis to remain in the United States are likely to be quickly deported, and future migrants should not fall for the lies of smugglers who claim otherwise,” said a senior official serving as Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security, Kristie. A Canegallo.

Since June 2024, DHS has expelled or returned more than 160,000 people and operated more than 495 international repatriation flights to more than 145 countries, it says.

DHS said that over the past year it has expelled individuals from the United States to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Egypt, Senegal, India and Uzbekistan, between other countries. It deported or removed more people in fiscal 2024 than in any year since fiscal 2010, it says.
