How JMU can earn a Sun Belt Championship bid

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Saturday night marked a pivotal moment in the Sun Belt East Division race.

Coming into the week, JMU was on the outside looking in for a possible run to represent the East Division in the Sun Belt championship game. At the end of the night, Georgia Southern’s loss to Troy and JMU’s win against Old Dominion brought the Dukes closer.

As it stands, JMU is tied for second in the division with Georgia Southern, although the Eagles hold the tiebreaker. Heading into the final weeks, a clear path emerged on how JMU could not only make the Sun Belt Championship Game, but also have a chance to host it. Here’s how to do it:

JMU is part of the SBC championship if:

– JMU wins last two games against Appalachian State and Marshall

– Georgia Southern loses one of the last two games

JMU hosts the SBC Championship if:

– JMU wins the last two games

– Georgia Southern loses one of the last two games

– Louisiana loses one of the last two games.

While JMU doesn’t control their destiny, they will look to either Coastal Carolina or Appalachian State to help them in their efforts, as both teams will face Georgia Southern to close out the season.

JMU now turns its attention to Saturday, November 23 as the Dukes travel to Boone, North Carolina to take on Appalachian State. Kick-off is set for 2:30 p.m.
