Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake has been out for a week now and while it’s receiving a lot of praise in its home country of Japan, it seems some players are having difficulty with the game, especially on Switch.

As highlighted by Automaton MediaA article from the weekly Josei Prime cited reviews of the game from local players, as well as a common problem that seems to crop up for many long-timers. Dragon Quest III players is the text size in this latest remake. Many players say that the “small” text hurts their eyes.

If you’re also playing on Switch in handheld mode, that won’t necessarily help the situation. Automaton further notes how “the game’s target audience has become old and far-sighted” and that many of those same players might be struggling 36 years later. Here is one of those comments translated:

“The Dragon Quest 3 remake is great, but as a member of the Dragon Quest generation, the Switch screen is hard on my farsightedness. The text is so small”

It seems that Nintendo legend Takaya Imamura even reacted to the matter with a simple “uh-oh” on his social media account…

There are plenty of quality-of-life options in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, including the ability to speed up text and even adjust the camera angle to provide a closer perspective (which we found useful when switching between TV and monitor configurations), but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be an option to increase the text size.

Square Enix could potentially roll out a patch allowing users to increase the text size in the game, but there is no official update on this at the moment. Even if some players seem to have difficulty with the text, this remake is still worth a look. The main problem we thought we had with the Switch version was some performance issues.
