Trial opens for illegal immigrant accused of murdering student in Georgia

Nov. 15 (UPI) — A bench trial for murdered student Laken Riley, who was allegedly killed by an undocumented immigrant, began Friday in Athens, Georgia, with the release of a graphic video depicting the moment her body was discovered.

Riley, 22, a student at Augusta University, was killed in February. His body was found in a wooded area from the nearby University of Georgia campus in Athens.

José Ibarra, a native of Venezuela who entered the country illegally, pleaded not guilty to 10 counts, including intentional murder, three counts of felony murder, kidnapping with bodily injury and aggravated assault with intent to rape.

The accusations against Ibarra have become highly politicized during this year’s presidential campaign as President-elect Donald Trump highlighted It did so by attacking President Joe Biden’s handling of the U.S. southern border, while Democrats accused Trump of exploiting a tragedy for political gain.

Riley’s murder also gave rise to several new state laws cracking down on illegal immigration, including a measure in Georgia, requiring local sheriffs to check the immigration status of anyone over the age of 18 who has been arrested, detained or even suspected of committing a crime.

Prosecutors presented their first evidence against Ibarra on Friday, including dramatic video footage taken from the body camera of the officer who discovered Riley’s body near a hiking trail on campus, Sgt. Kenneth Maxwell of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

Amid audible gasps and screams from courtroom participants, the the video showed Maxwell administering CPR to the student’s body and calling University of Georgia campus police to establish a perimeter around the crime scene.

Prosecutors also played audio of an emergency 911 call Riley made around the time she was murdered, as well as another call from a UGA student linked to accusations that Ibarra also attempted to break into a student housing complex before the murder.

During opening statements, prosecutors laid out the timeline of Riley’s death.

They said her roommates went looking for her after she didn’t return home from jogging and, after finding her AirPods on the trail, called the police and reported her missing.

Police used “pings” from Riley’s cell phone to find her body under a leaf-covered tree, about 20 yards from a running trail in the woods. Nearby were rocks covered in his blood. His phone was later found, allegedly marked with Ibarra’s left thumbprint.

The victim’s Apple Watch showed that she called 911 after stopping her run, and although Riley’s voice was not heard on the audio, experts said enhancements revealed that the voice of a man is audible on the digital recording.
