Teams excluded from the second CFP ranking

play

Just as the frustrations with the first College Football Playoff Rankings As we settled in, the sport followed its usual path of chaos – completely changing the landscape of the projected playoff field.

The rankings were shaken up when Georgia fell flat against Mississippi And Miami couldn’t stay perfect when he faced Georgia Tech. As a result, some teams have seen their playoff chances increase while others feel uncertainty about whether they will qualify for the 12 teams.

There are three weeks left in the regular season – and conference championship week – so there is still plenty of chance the standings could change drastically. Removals the second ranking were mostly justified, but some teams still got the short end of the stick.

Here’s who was offended this week:

Indiana

The Hoosiers moved up three spots to No. 5, but they still aren’t completely liked by the committee.

Indiana is still one spot behind Penn State, which doesn’t make a lot of sense. Yes, Penn State’s only loss was to Ohio State, but Indiana is still undefeated and should be rewarded for being one of four teams remaining undefeated. According to the eye test, Indiana has also been more dominant than the Nittany Lions.

The close win over Michigan – the Hoosiers’ closest – combined with Washington’s dismantling of Penn State is likely why the Nittany Lions still hold the advantage…but Indiana has outperformed Penn State this season. Now the pressure will be on Indiana against Ohio State, and it will likely be penalized more harshly than the Nittany Lions should it also fall to the Buckeyes.

Georgia

There is nothing wrong with Georgia’s position. It deserves it. But it shows how a very good football team can become a victim of the new playoff format.

Thanks to being guaranteed a spot for the top five conference champions, the Bulldogs are currently out of the field, even in 12th place thanks to Boise State. Now the Bulldogs have to hope many more dominoes fall to get back on the field. Georgia is behind both teams it lost to — Alabama and Mississippi — showing the committee values head-to-head record. So, the Bulldogs need the Crimson Tide, Rebels or another at-large team to drop another game — a game worthy of them — just to get into the bracket.

Right now, Boise State and Army appear to be the top contenders in the Group of Five to qualify, and it won’t matter where they rank behind the Bulldogs if they win the conference titles. A lot of help is needed in Athens.

Southern Methodist

Only one team is still undefeated in the ACC, but that means nothing when it comes to qualifying for a playoff spot. Southern Methodist should have gotten a big boost with Miami falling from the ranks of the undefeated, but instead the Mustangs are at 14th in the standings while Miami is still expected to earn the ACC automatic bid.

The Hurricanes’ loss to Georgia Tech isn’t necessarily bad since the Yellow Jackets are a solid team, but the loss is worse than SMU’s lone loss that came in a close loss to Brigham Young. Miami and SMU share joint wins against Louisville and Duke, but the Mustangs also have another quality win against Pittsburgh while the Hurricanes boast nothing else.

Currently, the only path SMU appears to have to make the playoffs is to win the conference title, which is a much tougher road than Miami currently has.

Army

Being an undefeated Group of Five team clearly doesn’t mean as much as being an SEC team with three losses.

The Black Knights only moved up one spot but are still behind Missouri and LSU while they were also passed by South Carolina. This comes after a game in which Army didn’t destroy North Texas, but clearly showed it was the better team in a 14-3 victory. Meanwhile, LSU was destroyed by Alabama, Missouri beat a bad Oklahoma team, and South Carolina got a boost by beating a team that wasn’t even ranked by the committee ( Vanderbilt).

Barring a miracle, Army doesn’t appear to have much chance of making the playoffs, which is an unfortunate circumstance for a team having a dream season.
