Ruckus in J&K assembly after engineer Rashid’s brother displays banner on Article 370, session briefly adjourned

Opposition leaders protested aggressively in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Thursday, prompting the speaker to briefly suspend proceedings as BJP members began shouting slogans against the resolution which called for the establishment of a special status for the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir, which was recently passed.

BJP members created a commotion in the hall following the adoption of the resolution demanding that the Center formulate a constitutional framework to restore the special status of the erstwhile state, which was passed by the House yesterday.

While BJP MP, who is also Leader of Opposition, Sunil Sharma was clarifying the resolution this time, an AIP leader and Langate MP Sheikh Khursheed jumped into the well of the house with a placard saying restore Articles 370 and 35A.

The reaction from BJP members was one of anger. They too jumped into the well, took the sign and tore it into pieces.

#WATCH | Srinagar: The J&K Assembly session resumes after being briefly adjourned following a ruckus when engineer Rashid’s brother and Awami Ittehad Party MP Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh unfurled a banner on the restoration of section 370.

President Abdul Rahim Rather, having stood up in the face of the cries, suspended the proceedings for 15 minutes. However, this did not happen and the BJP members walked around even when the House was adjourned.

The House had been calm as it was after the resolution was passed on Wednesday, but it was chaos again, as BJP members raised the decibel levels, at which point the proceedings were once again disrupted and the Speaker had to send the House home for the day.

J&K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary had moved the resolution which said: “That this Legislative Assembly reaffirms the importance of special status and constitutional guarantees, which safeguard the identity, culture and rights of the people of the Jammu and Kashmir, and expresses concern over their unilateral withdrawal. ยป

In order to restore special status and constitutional guarantees, the JK Assembly called on the Government of India to initiate a dialogue with the elected representatives of the JK and develop constitutional procedures for this purpose.
