“Dogs on the Avenue” raises $5,000 for community missions | News, Sports, Jobs

OBSERVER Photos by Braden Carmen Volunteers at St. John’s United Church of Christ sold hot dogs every Friday afternoon throughout the summer and fall, nicknamed “Dogs on the Avenue” , to raise funds for mission trips.

“It’s been wonderful. The city loves it. » said Kathie Parker, a church member who is organizing the event as a volunteer.

By the beginning of summer, with only one Friday afternoon canceled due to bad weather, selling hot dogs became a weekly routine from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday for many Church volunteers.

The soups and baked goods for sale were prepared by Church members and each weekly event was organized by volunteers. The fundraiser ended last Friday.

“It’s a lot of fun. We meet a lot of people. said Bobbi Deering, one of the church’s volunteer members Friday. “We’re having fun, really. »

Parker estimates that about $5,000 was raised by the church this year. “It’s thanks to the Dunkirks” Parker said. “They have been wonderful, supporting us so well.”

St. John’s United Church of Christ hopes to impact its community through several “missions”as he supports rural ministry, hospice care, the RO Foundation, Save a Christmas, New Directions, Meals on Wheels and the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County.

Boys & Girls Club staff members often look forward to Friday afternoons for what they playfully call “Glittering day”. Club Executive Director Jeannie Gallaway and Sarah Warren joined the party Friday for one last time this year.

While the “Dogs on the Avenue” With the season over, St. John’s United Church of Christ is far from finished providing meals to the community to raise funds. The Church has planned an Election Day event Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 733 Central Avenue in Dunkirk, where homemade soups and sandwiches are available for $7, dine-in or takeout. The Church is a designated voting location.

The Church also hosts a monthly dinner, at a cost of $13 per person, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Dates are set through May, including November 16, December 21, January 18, February 15, March 15, April 26 and May 17. Call (716) 366-0710 for tickets or more information.
