Do you have a PS5 Pro? Here are the settings you will want to change on your TV

Sony launched its most powerful console to date in the PS5 Pro. It has a mountain of promise at the premium price of $699 (of course, without a disk drive or vertical stand). The new iteration of the PS5 offers some interesting improvements over its predecessor, although you have to squint to see any major differences between the two. PS5 Pro vs. PS5.

If you were one of the lucky few to get your hands on the new system You’ll need expert advice to get the most out of what it has to offer by changing some TV settings after setup. After all, no TV is perfectly balanced for gaming right out of the box, and you shouldn’t expect Game Mode to be the answer to everything.

In fact, we regularly recommend several TV settings to change on your new TVbecause there are a ton of unnecessary and often even questionable settings to avoid. When it comes to gaming, some settings are automatic, but that’s not always the case, especially for HDR workloads.

If you want to get the most out of your new PS5 Pro, changing these TV settings on your new or old TV will greatly benefit your experience. Although some settings are not interchangeable between TV brands, I will try to shed some light on what type of setting is changed.

What TV settings should I turn off for PS5 Pro?

The first step to optimizing your TV for PS5 Pro is to make sure your TV is not set to its power-saving mode (sometimes called “Eco mode”). You can learn all about these features in our guide at how to deactivate Eco modebut this will ensure that your TV does not automatically adjust the picture based on ambient lighting conditions.

Next, you will need to make sure that all AI-related settings are disabled. This can cause unnecessary adjustments to the image quality and disrupt the image in ways we don’t want to see while gaming.

Fortunately, they are not difficult to find; they will usually have “AI” in their name and may even have their own tab in the system settings. On LG For TVs, for example, these settings include AI Picture Pro, AI Brightness, and AI Genre Selection. The only one you might want to keep is AI Sound Pro, as it won’t adjust the image.

If available, make sure to also disable 4:4:4 passthrough, as this will only really benefit those using the best gaming PCs. Motion-related settings (such as TruMotion and Motionflow) should also be disabled, as they can cause motion-related artifacts during gameplay.

What TV settings should I enable for PS5 Pro?

Now that we’ve largely covered the settings you need to disable for the PS5 Pro, let’s move on to the settings you need to make sure are enabled.

First of all, if you don’t want to worry about different video settings, we recommend using your TV’s dedicated gaming mode to get the smoothest performance with the lowest latency. Indeed, Game mode automatically disables many of the settings described in the previous section. If your TV has Auto Low Latency mode (ALLM), it should automatically switch to this mode whenever a console is detected.

The PS5 Pro really unlocks the potential of HDR gaming, so making the most of your TV’s backlight for HDR gaming is recommended. On LED and mini-LED TVs, look for a setting called Peak Brightness (or something similar) and set it to High. (For OLED TVs, a similar setting may be called OLED Pixel Brightness.)

If your TV has local dimming, make sure you get the most out of it by adjusting its local dimming setting to its highest setting.

Unfortunately, the PS5 Pro (like its predecessor) still does not have Dolby Vision support, which means you won’t get that great HDR performance from this certification, but you can still play in HDR.

Optimizing TV sound for PS5 Pro

First, determine whether you’re using the TV’s built-in speakers or an external device, like a Dolby Atmos soundbar. If you rely on your TV’s speakers, you’ll only need to worry about the different audio modes available to you. Most TVs have some sort of simulated surround sound setting and we recommend enabling it.

If you opt for a soundbar, all you need to do is connect it to the dedicated ARC input on your TV (or via Bluetooth) and change your audio mode to reflect the connected device.

As mentioned earlier, while all other AI picture performance settings should be disabled to ensure a decent picture, AI-related audio settings are a matter of personal preference.

Optimize your PS5 Pro settings

Obviously, the buck doesn’t just stop at television. The PS5 Pro itself (and your games) offer settings you’ll want to change before playing.

In the Video Settings tab on your PS5 Pro, make sure the following settings are adjusted accordingly:

RGB Range: “Limited”
HDR: “Enabled when supported”
VRR: “Apply to unsupported titles”

Everything else should be set to automatic, but I would also check your sound settings. Change the HDMI device type depending on what you’re using: your TV speakers, AV amplifier, or soundbar.

Additionally, if your TV, soundbar or speaker system supports it, you can change your audio format (priority) to Dolby Atmoswhich could give you good surround sound, depending on your setup.

Remember: These are the settings we recommend to get the most out of your PS5 Pro, but if you really like the way your TV looks or sounds with certain settings enabled, by all means use them. Keep in mind, however, that some of these may affect certain aspects of gaming performance (like input lag).
