Bathing water regulations in Northern Ireland are out of step – report

The OEP report also welcomes the Executive’s draft government programme, which commits to tackling the challenges of Lough Neagh, which has been seriously affected by blue-green algae.

Agriculture and Environment Minister Andrew Muir welcomed the report, adding that it was a “useful and constructive contribution” to improving bathing water quality.

He indicated that some of the recommendations were already being studied, such as extending the current bathing season.

Muir said the department was collecting data to inform future policy direction.

“I agree that we can do more together to improve the quality of bathing waters… we can only protect bathing waters and public health by ensuring that appropriate measures are implemented in watersheds,” he said.

“I recognize that a source-to-sea approach is essential and will work across all sectors to ensure improvements in water quality.”
