New Delhi: In a bid to minimize road accidents in the country, the government on Saturday said it has asked district collectors and magistrates to launch a nationwide campaign targeting manufacturers and retailers selling substandard products. helmets for two-wheelers.

Substandard helmets lacking the required equipment BIS certificationare sold at roadsides, posing a serious risk to public safety and has been linked to numerous deaths in road accidents. The government has already made the wearing of helmets compulsory under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.


The government has called for strict action against manufacturers operating without a BIS license or using counterfeit ISI branding, as well as retailers selling these substandard products to unsuspecting consumers. “Consumers can check whether a helmet manufacturer is BIS approved through the BIS Care app or by visiting the BIS website,” the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said.

This initiative responds to growing concerns about the quality of helmets available on the market and their essential role in saving lives on the road.

“Helmets save lives, but only if they are of good quality. This initiative is crucial to removing unsafe helmets from the market and raising awareness among consumers about the importance of BIS certified products. We urge all stakeholders to actively participate in this campaign for the safety of our citizens,” said Nidhi Khare, Secretary, Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

The government has urged district officials to take personal interest in this issue and launch a special campaign to ensure implementation of the quality control order. District officials are encouraged to collaborate with district SP and BIS field officers to identify and address violations.

To date, 162 licenses have been cancelled/expired related to the manufacturing of substandard/non-lSI helmets. Besides, a total of 27 searches and seizures were conducted for misuse of BIS standard mark/violation of quality control orders and complaints were filed in various courts, the ministry informed.
