Jake Paul’s boxing match against Mike Tyson had a lot of hype. It was still a 27 year old man fighting a 58 year old man.

Technically, Paul won the fight. He landed more punches, won more rounds and had his hand raised by the referee. It’s still hard to say he helped anything other than his bank account by beating a man four years after he was able to collect his Social Security checks.

The match somehow received official approval, the largest age gap ever allowed by officials of the beleaguered sport. For a round or two it looked like this might be a real fight, but then Paul had Tyson reeling in the third and it was very clear what was happening from there.

Tyson didn’t have the reach or speed to hit Paul, who worked him over and over with the jab. At one point, commentator Rosie Perez openly wondered why Paul “didn’t just go the distance” over Tyson, and the answer was that the YouTuber and his supporters probably wanted the fight to go the distance. Tyson landed a total of 18 punches in eight two-minute rounds.

Paul can at least still say he draws a crowd like no other in boxing, but that could have been counterproductive. Fighting one of the legends of the 90s brought in a new level of fans, eager to see Tyson fight again and maybe finally put an end to this show. Instead, they made Paul carry an old man. Paul’s set of official victories consists of MMA fighters, old men, complete anonymous people and a former NBA player.

No objective observer was satisfied with what he saw. Some were frustrated, others just sad.
