Tokyo | Luxury hotels clustered around the Imperial Palace, from the Otani with its century-old gardens to the Mandarin Oriental and its magnificent views of the sprawling city, have welcomed more than their share of Australian private investors this year.

Federation Asset Management chief executive Cameron Brownjohn, who oversees investments of more than $3 billion, has visited Japan four times since January. Michael McNamara of Potentia Capital has been there five times. John Wylie of Tanarra Capital managed to travel to Tokyo twice.
