Boeing factory workers vote to approve contract and end 53-day strike

Unionized Boeing machinists voted Monday to accept a contract offer and end their strike after more than seven weeks, paving the way for the aerospace giant to resume production of its best-selling airliner and generate much-needed cash.

Leaders of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ Seattle district said 59 percent of members who voted agreed to approve the company’s fourth formal offer and the third put to a vote. The agreement includes salary increases of 38% over four years, as well as ratification and productivity bonuses.

However, Boeing refused to respond to the strikers’ demand to restore a company pension plan which was frozen almost ten years ago.
