Final: Syracuse 74, Colgate 72

Despite three missed free throws that would have potentially sealed the game, Syracuse was able to escape with a 74-72 victory over the Colgate Raiders on Tuesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome.

The game started with a 7-0 run by Syracuse, but Colgate quickly tied the game and eventually took the lead. This kind of back and forth would continue into the start of the first half. Both teams looked good offensively, but Colgate made its mark offensively in transition, scoring 11 points on the fast break in the first twenty minutes of action.

The Orange finished the first half with a 36-33 lead and, as they had in the first half, they came out hot. An 11-3 run gave SU its first double-digit lead, and they led by as many as 13 in the contest. Colgate, however, responded with a run of its own. They made five of six shots and erased that double-digit lead, cutting it to two points with ten minutes remaining.

The Raiders continued to push the pace in transition and scored almost at will on the counterattack. Guard Jalen Cox, in particular, played a key role in this fast-paced game. He scored a game-high 21 points, many of them in transition.

With less than 40 seconds left and a slim two-point lead, Syracuse forward Davis gets two trips to the free throw line to make it a two-possession game. On both trips to the line, he missed the first of the individual shots. On the second miss, Lucas Taylor grabs the rebound and is fouled. Taylor then missed her free throw.

With one last chance, the Raiders pushed the ball down the field but failed to make a shot to force overtime or take the lead.

Three players scored in double figures for the Orange. Eddie Lampkin led the way with 15 points, including his first career three-pointer. He also had 12 rebounds and five assists.

Chris Bell scored 14 points. Many of those points came on a solo 7-0 run in the second half. JJ Starling, who fouled out late in the game, scored 12 points.

Something to watch out for; The misfortunes of Syracuse on the side of charity.

Over the last two games, the Orange have missed 15 free throws. Both games were at home, so noise from opposing fans can’t necessarily be to blame. Like this match, the last match against Le Moyne was decided on a free throw.

Second half

After a missed Colgate three that would have given them the lead, Syracuse recovered a loose ball before Davis was fouled and sent to the line.

Davis misses the one-and-one free throw. But he redeems himself on the defensive end by rising above the rim for the rebound. He is immediately fouled and gets another chance to ice the game at the line.

Another missed free throw by Davis, but Taylor grabs the offensive rebound. He is fouled, but misses his free throw. Colgate pushes the ball down the court but is unable to get a shot off in the final seconds.

12:42 remaining: Syracuse 74, Colgate 72

Lampkin makes a nice overhand pass to a cutting bell that finishes inside. This is his fifth assist of the evening.

Following a missed dunk attempt by Davis, Cox pushed the ball in transition and was fouled by Starling. This foul was his fifth and the veteran goalkeeper is out for the rest of the competition.

After giving up a score, Lampkin came right back to center Colgate Woodward, regaining a slim two-point lead.

3:47 remaining: Syracuse 68, Colgate 66

Moore hits a runner as the shot clock ends. The freshman is making an impact tonight, as classmate Donnie Freeman did in the previous contest.

Colgate’s Jalen Cox torched the Orange defense both in the half court and in transition. The fast guard is the first to 20 points on the evening.

7:56 remaining: Syracuse 63, Colgate 58

Bell hits a pair at the free throw line to end the Oranges’ drought. On the next downhill, he hits his defender with a pump fake and performs a pull-up from a mid-range dribble.

Moore finds Bell for the third corner, capping a personal 7-0 from Bell.

11:23 remaining: Syracuse 57, Colgate 55

In the final timeout, Colgate went on a 10-2 run, which cut SU’s lead to five.

On a broken play, Moore recovered a loose ball then got up for a jumper.

The Raiders stopped 5 of their last 6 shots, including a few from beyond the arc. A double-digit lead for the Orange disappeared in just over three minutes.

14:33 remaining: Syracuse 53, Colgate 40

A tough bucket in the paint for Freeman. Syracuse used its size and athleticism in the paint all night, both on the boards and in terms of scoring.

Starling with a runner in the hallway. Consistent contributions from him throughout the match.

Bell leaks in transition for a layup, the team’s first fast break points of the contest.

17:19 remaining: Syracuse 47, Colgate 36

Chris Bell opened the scoring in the second half with an and-one slam dunk. Credit Lampkin with the rebound pass assist.

Starling hits a three on the entry. On the next play, Lampkin hit his first career three at the top of the key.

A post-Lampkin throw leads to a score and caps an 11-3 Orange run to start the second half.

Halftime: Syracuse 36, Colgate 33

The Orange managed to avoid a slow start to the match, which allowed them to take a three-point lead at the break.

Both teams have played with a lot of pace so far. Perhaps the biggest difference so far is Syracuse’s rebounding. They outscored Colgate 25-17 in the first half, and that was credited to Lampkin and Davis. The front court duo combined for 12 rebounds, and many of those rebounds were on the offensive end. Davis’ biggest strength on this team seems to be his ability to crash the offensive board before coming back to score.

Colgate’s Chandler Baker leads all scorers with 12 points. For the Orange, Jyare Davis leads the team with eight.

This game will depend on who can stop first. Both teams shoot similar numbers both from the court and beyond the arc, so whoever can slow down the opposition will be able to take control in a closely contested game so far.

First half

Jaquan Carlos gets his first points of the competition on a three-point basket. The next play sees Lucas Taylor also knock down a three, his first of the season. Both looks were assisted by Lampkin.

Syracuse finished the first half scoreless in the final two and a half minutes.

3:47 remaining: Syracuse 30, Colgate 28

Davis is once again making his presence felt on the offensive boards. He skied for a missed jump hook by Lampkin before making a layup on defense.

No-look feed from Davis to Lampkin for the one-handed slam. This front court pairing has been productive for the Orange early in the season.

A Chandler Baker rainbow three in transition continues a trend for Colgate. 11 points in transition for the Raiders against 0 for the Orange.

6:51 remaining: Syracuse 26, Colgate 21

A Jyare Davis putback layup and three put the Orange up by three. He led the team in scoring in the last game.

Freshman Elijah Moore scores his first collegiate bucket with a free throw that was part of a 9-0 Syracuse run. The next play saw him go straight back to midrange for another jumper.

Petar Majstorovic, who set the tone in the last game with his physicality and energy, hit a corner three. A welcome site for an SU team that hasn’t had much shooting from center in recent years.

11:26 remaining: Syracuse 14, Colgate 16

Eddie Lampkin uses his size and strength to grab an offensive rebound and put it back for the score. The matchup between him and Jeff Woodward on the inside should be one to watch.

1:27 p.m. remaining: Syracuse 11, Colgate 11

The first shot of the day falls for JJ Starling to put Syracuse on the board. A good sign for him since he entered late in the previous match, losing 14 points.

On an approach, Donnie Freeman performs a smooth mid-range fade at about 10 feet. On the next possession, Starling drains a three.

Colgate’s Brady Cummins breaks Colgate’s scoreless streak with a floater. Syracuse kept them off the board for the first three minutes of play.

Freeman with a nice up and down move in the post. First four points for him.

After scoring the first seven points, the Raiders came back with three Orange turnovers to tie the game.

Pre-match

Syracuse (1-0) hosts one of its upstate New York rivals in Colgate (1-1).

This will be the 176th meeting between the two teams. The Orange hold the all-time series lead 128-47. The last time the two teams faced each other was a season ago, when SU overcame a 24-point second-half deficit.

Syracuse is coming off a hard-fought 86-82 win over Le Moyne in its season debut.

Early turnovers and defensive mistakes put SU in a hole early on. But an improved offensive second half where the Orange shot just under 60% from the field helped them pull away.

Delaware transfer Jyare Davis led the way with a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Donnie Freeman recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds in his varsity debut.

Colgate fell in its previous game against Drexel, losing 73-56 on the road. The Raiders were the preseason favorites to win the Patriot League.

Leading Colgate are seniors Jeff Woodward and Nicolas Louis-Jacques. Woodward is averaging nearly 16 points per game and seven rebounds, while Louis-Jacques is averaging 13 per night and shooting over 40 percent from deep.

One thing to watch out for: getting started quickly

The Orange started their season opener with four turnovers in the first five minutes, which allowed the Dolphins to take a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish until the second half.

These early-season games are meant to be a tune-up for what looks to be a tough ACC schedule in the second half of the year.

Against top teams in the conference with high-end firepower like Duke and North Carolina, early turnovers can put Syracuse in deficits from which it may not be able to recover. Taking care of the ball in tonight’s game will be a step in the right direction.
