TL;DR

  • Apple will likely delay its first MacBook Air with an OLED display, according to supply chain sources.
  • The laptop was scheduled to launch in 2027, but is now expected to be delayed even further.
  • Poor sales of the first OLED-equipped iPad Pro and display costs are believed to be to blame for the delay.

For years we have heard rumors that Apple planned to introduce OLED displays in its Macbook double. Now it looks like the company might delay the cheapest MacBook with an OLED panel.

Analysts apparently expected Apple to launch an OLED-equipped MacBook Pro in 2026 and then an OLED-equipped MacBook Air in 2027. However, The Elect reports that the latter model will likely be delayed, citing Korean supply chain sources.

The outlet’s sources say a postponement was planned earlier this year and the development timeline for the necessary parts was also delayed.

These sources also pointed to Apple’s new iPad Pro models, which feature OLED displays, as proof that an OLED display alone is not enough to guarantee more sales. Several analyst forecasts have lowered shipments of new iPad Pros from 10 million units to six or seven million units.

The cost of OLED displays has also apparently been cited as one of the reasons for the likely delay. It is believed that only LG and Samsung can supply the necessary screens. Apple reportedly expressed a desire to reduce display costs with Korean brands, but failed to reach an agreement.

Either way, it looks like those hoping for a more affordable MacBook with a great screen will have to wait at least a few years. Alternatively, there is no shortage of Windows laptops with OLED displays, such as the Samsung Galaxy Book range, HUAWEI MateBook Seriesand Lenovo’s line of devices.
