Insider offers grim outlook on potential free agency additions to goalkeepers

THE Cleveland Goalies have several clear roster needs. The most glaring is the addition of one or two starting pitchers and another outfielder capable of producing at the plate.

However, making these upgrades is much easier said than done. Bringing in free agents could be even more difficult this offseason, given the views on the free agency class from respected MLB insider Buster Olney.

Olney revealed Tuesday that he spoke to an evaluator who thought the price tag for high-profile free agents could be astonishing this offseason. “There are more needs than available talent…There are needs everywhere,” Olney wrote on X.

This isn’t good news for the Guardians organization, which typically doesn’t spend a lot of money during the offseason.

So far, Cleveland’s only free agency move is bring back veteran receiver Austin Hedgeswho has more of a leadership role on the roster than a difference maker.

Onley’s report doesn’t mean all hope is lost for Cleveland regarding seeking upgrades before 2025 Opening Day.

One outcome could be that the Guardians recognize that a window of contention is opening and decide that now is the time to spend big money on a player if the front office believes it will benefit them for the foreseeable future .

If that doesn’t happen, Cleveland could also turn to the trade market and ultimately give up some of its potential talent in favor of established major league players.

None of this is to say the Guardians won’t do anything this winter, but it does show that Cleveland isn’t the only team looking for additions that could increase the price of these upgrades.
